The other day I was approached by a patient with the iconic community pharmacy question: “Why does it take 30 minutes to count my pills?” Often, this question is all it takes to flip your day upside down. It can epitomize that patients do not understand our expertise and the difficult job we do on their behalf. I have seen colleagues scoff at this type of patient and reiterate that their prescription will be ready as soon as possible, and they will just need to wait—or worse, snapped back, “We are making sure you don’t die.” However, I took a different approach: stopping negativity in its tracks so I can have a more positive relationship with my patients and staff.
